Declaration of compliance explained

Find out what the declaration of compliance is, how to submit it, how to confirm you’ve met your auto-enrolment duties, and how we support you along the way.

What’s the declaration of compliance?

If youre an employer with at least one employee, you must complete a declaration of compliance to tell The Pensions Regulator what youve done to meet your auto-enrolment duties.

How it works

  • You must submit your declaration online to The Pensions Regulator within 5 months of your duties start date.
  • If you miss this deadline, you could be fined.
  • Youll also need to re-declare your compliance every 3 years – even if you have no one to re-enrol.

Completing a declaration of compliance is a legal requirement, but the process is straightforward – and we're here to help.

Two ways to complete your declaration of compliance

We can do it for you

We can submit your form on your behalf, so you have one less thing to do. Just choose this option in your Online Services account once you’ve signed up.

For re-enrolment, you’ll need to re-declare your compliance to The Pensions Regulator yourself – we can’t do this for you.

Complete it yourself

You can complete the form yourself on The Pensions Regulator's website. You can use our declaration checklist below to make sure you have everything you need before you start.

If you think you might miss your deadline for declaring your compliance, you should let The Pensions Regulator know as soon as possible.

What you’ll need to provide

You’ll need to wait until you receive your duties start date letter from The Pensions Regulator, as it contains your PAYE reference and letter code which you’ll need to include in your declaration.

  2. Pension type: Occupational pension scheme
  3. Employer Pension Scheme Reference (EPSR): Your 5 or 6-digit account number with us

Have more than one account with us for the same business?

If you have multiple accounts with us, you only need to complete one declaration of compliance, as they are classed as a single pension scheme.

If you also have an account with another pension provider, you’ll need to complete a separate declaration of compliance for that scheme.
